Messina ATM driver assaulted on shuttle bus

An ATM driver in Messina was assaulted while attempting to calm a dispute on board a shuttle bus. The victim was reportedly struck in the throat with a punch during the incident.

Local political leaders, including Libero Gioveni of Fratelli d’Italia and Cosimo Oteri of Lega, have called for concrete security measures rather than mere expressions of solidarity. Oteri noted that this is the fourth such assault in four months, as documented by the mayor’s social media posts. Proposed solutions include the installation of protective driver cabins, enhanced SOS alarm systems connected to emergency services, and periodic private security patrols.

Messina Mayor Federico Basile and ATM President Chiara Sterrantino expressed solidarity with the worker. Basile stated that the administration is working with the Prefecture to implement anti-violence measures and strengthen controls, while Sterrantino emphasized the company's commitment to worker safety through collaboration with trade unions.
