Messina building collapse investigation begins

Technical experts have begun a formal investigation into the building collapse in Pistunina, Messina, which occurred on July 30 and resulted in six deaths. Engineers Andrea Prota, Antimo Fiorillo, and Rodolfo Urbani, appointed by the Prosecutor's Office, conducted an initial site inspection to determine the causes of the structural failure. The investigation is examining whether ongoing modernization works on the first floor contributed to the collapse.

Three individuals are currently under investigation: engineer Pietro Leone, entrepreneur Alessandro Panarello, and construction company owner Pasquale D’Alì. The charges include multiple manslaughter, negligent disaster, and the willful removal of safety precautions against workplace accidents. Investigators are also analyzing debris stored at the San Filippo stadium parking lot and the 24th Regiment area.

In separate incidents across Italy, a fatal Jeep crash on the A32 Torino-Bardonecchia highway left two people dead and one injured near the Giaglione tunnel. Additionally, in Torre Canne, a German tourist escaped unharmed after his car unexpectedly rolled into the sea, an incident suspected to be caused by a brake malfunction.
