Messina building collapse: four dead, two still missing

A multi‑storey building in the Pistunina district of Messina collapsed on 30 July 2026. Rescue teams have recovered four bodies: Carmelo Leone, Rosa Leone, 21‑year‑old shop assistant Alessandra Frazzica and 27‑year‑old Sara Leone. Two people remain unaccounted for – Santino Magazzù, husband of Rosa Leone, and domestic worker Lhairu Warnakulasuriya.

More than 70 firefighters, canine units, drones and heavy‑earth‑moving equipment continue to search the rubble under difficult conditions. The provincial fire commander Michele Burgio said, “Continuiamo a scavare per trovare le tre persone che sono ancora disperse – il lavoro è complesso, tutti i solai si sono adagiati l’uno sull’altro e non ci sono spazi liberi.”

The investigation, led by the Messina prosecutor’s office, has summoned three suspects for interrogation: entrepreneur Alessandro Panarello (54), builder Pasquale D’Alì (58) and engineer Pietro Leone (72), who designed the structure in 1989. Prosecutors are examining possible culpable homicide, negligence and violations of safety regulations while forensic experts prepare autopsies and technical assessments.
