Messina completes restoration of historic post-earthquake wooden barrack

Restoration work has been completed on a historic wooden barrack in the Villaggio Annunziata in Messina. The structure was originally built to provide emergency shelter following the devastating earthquake on December 28, 1908, which caused thousands of casualties.

Led by the Commissioner's Structure under Regional President Renato Schifani, the project aimed to preserve the historical and symbolic value of this rare surviving testimony of post-earthquake housing. Restoration efforts, directed by sub-commissioner Santi Trovato, focused on removing later alterations and returning the 1909 structure to its original characteristics.

The project is part of a broader initiative to promote a culture of prevention and civic identity. Through an agreement with the University of Messina and the Municipality of Messina, the site will be used for cultural, scientific, and educational purposes, as well as for research into civil protection and territorial safety. It is also intended to be integrated into local tourist itineraries.
