Messina elderly care facility Casa Serena faces permanent closure

In Messina, a significant controversy has emerged regarding Casa Serena, a municipal facility for the elderly. The structure has been closed for seven years due to required seismic upgrades and renovations.

There are growing concerns that the facility faces permanent closure because allocated funds—including resources from Agenda Urbana, the Development and Cohesion Fund, and approximately 4 million euros from the PNRR—may have been lost due to failure to submit projects within the required deadlines. Currently, elderly residents are being housed at Ipab Collereale, a situation described as a social and economic failure for the community. The issue has become a point of political contention between local administration and opposition forces.
