Messina football club confronts stadium crisis as new owners launch rebuilding plan
ACR Messina 1900 announced the cancellation of an international friendly with Malta's Victoria Hotspurs after the city’s two main venues proved unsuitable – the Franco Scoglio stadium lacks a playable turf and the Giovanni Celeste stadium is not authorised for matches. Club president Justin Davis blamed the lack of adequate facilities for the missed opportunity and urged local authorities to address the issue.
In parallel, the club has been taken over by the Racing City Group, led by entrepreneur Morris Pagniello and backed by Global Capital. The new owners have cleared roughly €1 million of debt, pledged €20 million for a new academy, and entered talks with the municipality to refurbish the stadium. They have also appointed former Catania director Maurizio Pellegrino and coach Alfio Torrisi, while signing several players, aiming to return Messina to the professional leagues as soon as possible.
