Messina launches new Center for Restorative Justice
A new Center for Restorative Justice has been established in Messina, Italy, through a collaborative partnership between the Municipality of Messina and the Spondé ETS Association. Presented at Palazzo Zanca, the initiative aims to create a stable network involving the judiciary, legal professionals, social services, and the University of Messina to support victims and offenders.
Aligned with the Cartabia reform, the center focuses on the human and social consequences of crimes, seeking to promote accountability and the reconstruction of community relationships rather than focusing solely on punishment. Mayor Federico Basile emphasized the project's potential to repair social fractures, while judicial officials highlighted the rehabilitative function of the law.
The University of Messina will play a key role in the project, with Rector Giovanna Spatari announcing the launch of specialized training programs and a master's degree for expert mediators.
