Accascina Regional Museum reopens after Antonello da Messina art theft

The Accascina Regional Museum in Messina has reopened to the public following a high-profile theft of works by Antonello da Messina during the Ferragosto holiday. The heist, which reportedly took less than three minutes, targeted the San Gregorio Polyptych and a double-sided panel.

Investigators are currently looking into several leads, including the possibility of an inside informant or 'basista' who provided details on security protocols. While two panels from the polyptych were recovered after being abandoned near the museum fence, four works remain missing: three panels from the San Gregorio Polyptych and one double-sided panel featuring 'Madonna with Child' and 'Ecce Homo'.

Police have seized a van found in an isolated area, though they are investigating whether the thieves switched vehicles to evade detection. Surveillance footage captured two suspects wearing dark clothing and full-face motorcycle helmets entering through a side door. Sicilian Region President Renato Schifani has ordered an internal inspection to determine organizational and operational responsibilities regarding the security breach.
