Messina museum theft: Antonello da Messina works stolen
Authorities are investigating the theft of four invaluable artworks attributed to Antonello da Messina from the Museo Regionale Interdisciplinare in Messina, Italy. The theft occurred during the night of August 15. While two of the stolen works were recovered after being abandoned outside the museum, the investigation remains active.
Messina Chief Prosecutor Antonio D’Amato stated that investigators are exploring several leads, including the possibility of involvement by organized crime or the mafia. A key focus of the inquiry is the museum's security management, specifically a 15-minute delay between the theft and the alarm activation. During this window, no guards were reportedly present in the control room.
In response to the incident, the Sicilian regional government has transferred the four museum custodians on duty during the theft to other cultural sites. They face disciplinary proceedings that could result in dismissal.
The National Research Council (CNR) has noted that advanced diagnostic data collected in 2018 could serve as a scientific ‘fingerprint’ to verify the authenticity of the works if they are recovered.
