Messina receives historical German documents regarding 1908 earthquake relief
Unpublished German documents dating from January 1909 have been donated to the Palacultura ‘Antonello da Messina’ historical archive. The documents were presented to Mayor Federico Basile by the Honorary German Consul in Messina, Nunzio Turiaco.
The records detail the relief efforts provided by Germany to the population of Messina following the devastating earthquake of December 28, 1908. Specifically, the German-language documents describe the contents of a freight train that arrived in Messina in January 1909, carrying essential goods sent from various German cities at the request of Consul Jacob.
The donation highlights the long-standing institutional and commercial ties between Messina and Germany. Historical records note that the first German diplomatic representation in Italy was established in Messina in 1873, shortly after German unification.
