Messina Regional Museum art theft investigation identifies new lead

Investigations are ongoing into the theft of four invaluable artworks by Antonello da Messina from the Regional Museum of Messina, which occurred on August 15. The stolen pieces include parts of the San Gregorio Polyptych and a bifronted tablet. While two panels were recovered by passersby near the museum, technicians also found over twenty fragments of the works on the museum floor.

Surveillance footage has provided a new lead, suggesting the involvement of a woman in the group. Investigators noted a slender figure wearing a backpack, a dark shirt, and a jet helmet. The shadow cast on the figure's clothing has led authorities to hypothesize the presence of a female suspect.

The theft was carried out by a commando of at least four people who entered through a rear access point where the alarm system was inactive. The investigation is being coordinated by the Messina Prosecutor's Office, with support from the Mobile Squad, the Carabinieri's Cultural Heritage Protection Command, and additional personnel from Rome.
