Messina Regional Museum art theft investigation targets security protocols

Investigations are underway following the theft of paintings by Antonello da Messina from the Museo regionale di Messina during the Ferragosto holiday. Authorities are scrutinizing the actions of the four security guards on duty that night. One guard provided a statement containing contradictions regarding the timeline of events that did not align with the accounts of his colleagues. Additionally, another employee admitted to silencing the alarm, believing it to be a false contact.

All four guards on duty have been placed on forced leave and transferred to other locations. While inspections ordered by Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani confirmed that the museum's alarm systems were functional, they also revealed failures in staff adherence to security protocols.

The incident has sparked criticism regarding the management of cultural heritage in Sicily. Critics argue that the theft highlights systemic issues, including weakened technical structures, personnel shortages, and a regional policy that prioritizes tourism over the rigorous protection and maintenance of historical assets.
