Messina road projects face delays and safety concerns

Messina city officials are under pressure over the state of local roads in the IV district. Councilor Nicola Cucinotta has filed an urgent written request to the mayor and the road‑maintenance assessor, highlighting numerous arterial streets—such as Via Monsignor D’Arrigo, Via Quod Quaeris and Via Gesù e Maria—that remain in disrepair despite a promised one‑million‑euro contract for extraordinary maintenance.

The deteriorated surfaces, deep potholes and dangerous level differences pose a daily safety risk to pedestrians, motorists and cyclists near schools, sports facilities and commercial areas. Cucinotta is demanding clarification on work priorities, a timetable for starting the works and the inclusion of these streets in the rebuilding plan by September.

Separately, a regional contract worth about 7 million euros has been awarded to Preve Costruzioni and the Infra.Tech consortium to replace guard rails on the A20 Palermo‑Messina highway. The works will cover nearly 40 kilometres of viaducts between the Messina‑Sud barrier (Tremestieri) and Milazzo, addressing safety deficiencies that have lingered for five years. The project aims to improve driver safety on this crucial motorway segment.

Both initiatives reflect ongoing concerns about infrastructure maintenance and public safety in the Messina area.
