Messina building collapse: Search operations continue for missing persons

Search and recovery operations continue in the Pistunina district of Messina following a building collapse on July 30. Firefighters are working to locate two missing persons, Santino Magazzù and Lairu Warna-Kulasuriya. Authorities are also working to identify human remains recovered from the site through DNA testing conducted by the Carabinieri's Ris unit.

Messina Mayor Federico Basile has requested that the Sicilian Region declare a state of emergency to provide resources for the recovery efforts and to support local businesses impacted by the closure of major roads in the area. Technical investigations into the cause of the collapse are expected to begin in late August.

The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, leading to a somber atmosphere during recent religious and cultural celebrations. Local processions and festivals have been modified to show respect for the victims, including the youngest victim, 21-year-old Alessandra Frazzica.
