Messina Strait Bridge Funding Secured as Italy Pushes Forward
The Italian government reaffirmed its commitment to the Messina Strait Bridge, a strategic project intended to link Sicily and Calabria and improve the movement of people and goods. Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini attended the opening of the board of directors meeting of the Stretto di Messina company, praised the work and called the bridge an “opera strategica per l’intero Paese.”
Sub‑secretary Tullio Ferrante confirmed that €9.28 billion from the Ministry of Infrastructure’s budget (through 2034) and an additional €3.882 billion from the EU Cohesion Fund (2021‑2027) are already earmarked for the project, ensuring full financial coverage. Ongoing discussions with the European Commission address environmental requirements and procurement rules, with technical integrations to be submitted in the coming days. The government will also present a new cabinet decree outlining the public‑interest justification for the bridge.
The board is chaired by Maurizio Basile and the company’s chief executive is Pietro Ciucci, who reported progress on the initiative.
