Messina Strait Bridge project aims to connect Sicily to mainland Italy

The Messina Strait Bridge project, a €13.5 billion initiative to connect mainland Italy with Sicily, has returned to the forefront of national discussion. If completed, the bridge will feature a 3.3-kilometer main span, making it the longest suspension bridge in the world.

The proposed structure, intended to span between Torre Faro and Villa San Giovanni in Calabria, will include six traffic lanes, two service lanes, and two railway lines. While the concept dates back to antiquity and has been revisited by various political administrations, construction has faced repeated delays, with the start date pushed from 2024 to 2025, and most recently to the summer of 2026.

Significant opposition exists due to the region's high seismic activity. The Messina Strait is one of Europe's most active earthquake zones, notably site to a 1908 disaster that killed over 80,000 people. Experts warn that the presence of three fault systems capable of producing magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquakes poses a severe risk to the bridge's towers and cable anchorages. Additionally, the project faces challenges regarding land expropriation for over 400 properties and ongoing environmental concerns.
