Messina traditions: The Vara and the struggle for a permanent museum
The Vara di Messina, a significant religious and cultural symbol of Messina, continues to be celebrated annually, though its long-term preservation remains a subject of discussion. Local official Cateno De Luca has highlighted the tradition as a pillar of the city’s identity, emphasizing the historical importance of the 'tiratori' (pullers) who carry the weight of the procession as a symbol of community responsibility.
Despite the cultural importance of the Vara and the accompanying Giants, there are ongoing challenges regarding their year-round display. A long-standing proposal from 1995 to establish a dedicated museum for these votive machines has stalled. The original project, designed by architect Nino Principato, aimed to create a permanent structure modeled after the church of Nostra Donna della Pietà. However, due to expired land use agreements and the need for redesigned plans, the artifacts currently remain in storage for most of the year.
