Messina tram reconstruction delayed, target reopening in 2027

The reconstruction of Messina’s tram line, suspended since March 2025, remains stalled across several sites, including Piazza della Repubblica. The project, overseen by ATM’s sole administrator Piero Cami, was launched in 2025 with an investment of over €28 million to modernise the electric network, relocate tracks, and add flood‑prevention measures. Councilor Dario Carbone questioned Cami during a mobility committee hearing about the uncertain timetable, the lack of traffic‑priority signal installation, and the need for final testing, urban furniture and bench placement.

Eleven new tram vehicles are planned for service, but the schedule is being revised, with officials citing a spring‑2027 target that is not guaranteed. While some aesthetic works, such as pedestrian islands on Viale San Martino, have been completed, functional sections continue to lag, and the city council is pressing for clearer deadlines and quality guarantees.
