Gaetano Armao under investigation in Sicilian waste tender probe

Gaetano Armao, the former Vice President of the Sicilian Region, is facing a new investigation by Palermo prosecutors regarding a 147.1 million euro waste management tender. The probe focuses on a contract for waste collection and transport services covering Agrigento and nine other municipalities over a seven-year period.

Investigators suspect that a professional consultancy was used as a mechanism to mask illicit payments to Armao, who served as the president of the commission evaluating the technical and economic bids. The investigation has expanded to include six individuals, notably regional deputy Gaspare Vitrano, lawyer Pierluigi Matta, lawyer Valentina Matta, and two entrepreneurs from Porto Empedocle, Giuseppe Gaglio and Pietro Alongi.

Evidence from the investigation includes police surveillance and wiretaps. Authorities allege that Armao hid illicit funds inside a pendulum clock and recorded conversations where Matta discussed the distribution of payments. The case is being treated as a significant corruption inquiry within the regional administration.
