Messina water crisis highlights management and infrastructure issues

The province of Messina, Sicily, is facing significant water shortages and service disruptions during the summer months. Residents in various areas, including the northern zone of Messina city, Spartà, Patti, and the Ionian coast in Gaggi, have reported frequent outages and inadequate communication from local authorities.

Local political representative Domenico Giuseppe Spanò of Azione suggests that the crisis is not solely due to climate conditions, noting that despite rainy periods earlier in the year, water resources are being mismanaged. Issues are attributed to the fragmentation of management across multiple regional entities and technical failures within Sicilacque, a public company controlled by Italgas s.p.a. and the Sicilian Region. Despite the availability of PNRR and European funds for infrastructure and agriculture, the effective distribution and preservation of water resources remain a critical challenge for the territory.
