Messene welcomes Panagia Voulkaniotissa icon for annual pilgrimage

Thousands of faithful gathered in Messene to welcome the Holy and Miraculous Icon of Panagia Voulkaniotissa, which was transported from the Holy Monastery of Voulkano on Mount Ithomi. The annual tradition involves an overnight 21-kilometer procession starting from the monastery, where pilgrims walk to the city to honor the icon.

The icon is placed at the Holy Church of Zoodochos Pigi for an eight-day pilgrimage, lasting until September 28. This religious event is tied to a local tradition commemorating a miracle in the early 19th century, when the icon's procession was credited with ending a deadly epidemic in the region.

The ceremony included a procession through the main streets of Messene, attended by clergy, local officials, and representatives of the armed forces. The arrival of the icon also marks the beginning of the historic Nisiotiko Panegyri, a major religious and commercial festival in the Peloponnese.
