Mestre Bengali community faces mosque demolition and funding questions

A demolition order issued on August 14 has placed the future of a prayer space used by the Bengali community in Mestre, Italy, in jeopardy. The site, located in an area of via Torino, is currently being used by hundreds of worshippers daily. While community members argue the space is a fundamental right and a symbol of integration, local authorities contend the area is a commercial space that must be restored to its original use.

Beyond the immediate demolition threat, questions have been raised regarding the financing of larger religious projects in the Venice area. An association led by Prince Howlader, ‘Giovani per l’umanità’, has promoted a project for a large-scale mosque requiring approximately 15 million euros. However, there are ongoing concerns regarding the transparency of fundraising efforts and the lack of financial reporting for these significant sums.
