Mestre launches proximity cleaning pilot in Piave district

The Municipality of Venice has launched a pilot “proximity cleaning” service in the Piave district of Mestre. This new initiative establishes a direct link between the Local Police and the waste management company Veritas to accelerate the removal of abandoned waste, bottles, and other materials in areas prone to degradation and encampments.

Under this system, police officers identify critical areas through daily patrols and citizen reports. Veritas then integrates these locations into a targeted cleaning schedule, often beginning in the early morning hours. The pilot program follows inspections conducted in June by Mayor Simone Venturini and Vice Mayor Francesca Zaccariotto, which included consultations with local residents and business owners.

The initial phase focuses on the quadrant between Via Piave and Corso del Popolo, covering several specific streets and squares including Via Dante, Via Salettuol, and Piazzale Baisnizza. Vice Mayor Zaccariotto stated that the service aims to transform community feedback into concrete, immediate actions. If the experiment proves successful, the model may be expanded to other areas within the municipality.
