UK and Ireland brace for thunderstorms and flash‑flood risk
The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Northern Ireland, covering Antrim, Armagh, Down and Tyrone on Tuesday from 12:00 BST to 21:00 BST. Forecasts call for 20‑30 mm of rain within one to two hours, with a risk of flash flooding, power cuts and transport disruption. Similar warnings cover parts of Scotland, with up to 30‑50 mm of rain possible in an hour and gusty winds.
Met Eireann has also placed status‑yellow thunderstorm warnings over Dublin, Louth and Meath, and a yellow wind‑and‑rain warning for County Donegal, both active on Tuesday. The agency warned of heavy thundery showers, lightning, spot flooding and difficult travel conditions.
Scotland’s environment agency has issued flood alerts for several council areas—including Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife, Tayside and West Central Scotland—and a flood warning for Strath Oykel. The alerts cite the same heavy showers that are expected to move southward over the weekend, bringing a band of rain across the UK and reaching Ireland on Saturday.
