Met Office announces 2026/27 storm name list

The UK Met Office, in collaboration with Ireland’s Met Éireann and the Dutch national weather service KNMI, has announced the storm names for the 2026/27 season. The first three names on the list are Austen, Boelo, and Chloe.

Following a public call for suggestions that received over 40,000 entries, many names were chosen as tributes to loved ones, pets, or cultural figures, such as Shaun the Sheep. The naming process aims to help the public better identify, prepare for, and stay safe during severe weather events.

The storm naming convention follows an alphabetical order for the North Atlantic, excluding the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z. This practice has been in place since 2015 to coincide with the increased likelihood of low-pressure systems during the autumn and winter months.
