Met Police chief warns knife and gun suspects are being released on bail

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has expressed alarm over the release of suspects accused of serious knife and firearm offences due to an overloaded justice system and prison overcrowding. Sir Mark stated that far fewer defendants accused of knife crime are being remanded into custody, leading to a cycle where offenders are “charged again and again and again” and “bailed again and again and again.”

He noted that while toughening legislation has historically helped reduce serious crime, current capacity constraints are preventing the effective execution of these laws. Sir Mark warned that this failure to remand suspects is not a “theoretical risk,” noting it has already been linked to “stabbings” and “one or two homicides.”

As a specific example, the Commissioner highlighted a case involving an individual attempting to bring an 18-inch blade, described as resembling a “small sword,” to the Notting Hill Carnival. Despite this being the suspect's fourth knife offence of the year, the individual was placed on bail. Sir Mark added that similar patterns are being observed with firearm offences.
