Amnesty International accuses Meta of failing to curb anti-LGBTI content in Hungary

Amnesty International has released a report titled ‘It erodes my soul: Meta’s contribution to anti-LGBTI discourse in Hungary’, accusing Meta of failing to prevent harmful content targeting the LGBTI community on its platforms.

The organization claims that Meta’s policy decisions, including the weakening of protections for at-risk groups in January 2025 and a significant reduction in proactive content moderation, have had negative impacts on human rights in Hungary. Amnesty International noted that these risks were foreseeable and well-documented, particularly given the hostile political climate and legal restrictions under the government of Viktor Orbán.

The report highlights that Meta failed to properly assess how its global policy changes would affect the Hungarian LGBTI community. Interviewees reported that exposure to anti-LGBTI rhetoric on Facebook caused anxiety, frustration, and helplessness. The findings also reference the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires platforms to identify and mitigate systemic risks to human rights.
