Texas data center companies agree to new state regulatory standards

Major technology companies, including Meta, EdgeConneX, and Stream Data Centers, have agreed to comply with new regulatory standards for data center development in Texas. Established by Governor Greg Abbott, these guidelines aim to manage the rapid growth of AI-driven infrastructure by ensuring facilities “pay their own way” without shifting costs to taxpayers or residential utility customers.

The requirements mandate that data center operators provide detailed disclosures regarding electricity demand, on-site power generation plans, and water usage. Companies must also implement water-reuse technologies and demonstrate measures to minimize impacts on local electric grids, water supplies, and residential neighborhoods. The Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT will oversee audits to ensure compliance.

In El Paso, public tension remains high regarding Meta’s $14 billion project. Residents at a recent town hall expressed concerns over potential increases in utility rates and the massive demand for water and electricity. While utility representatives have denied that residential customers will absorb infrastructure costs, local officials continue to advocate for transparency and strict adherence to state-mandated protections.
