Meta AI launches in Threads direct messages globally
Meta announced that its Meta AI chatbot is now available in private direct‑message conversations on Threads worldwide. The rollout, which began on a Monday, lets users share Threads posts, images, links, videos and ask follow‑up questions within a one‑on‑one chat, mirroring the assistant already present on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The feature follows earlier limited tests of Meta AI in public Threads feeds in markets such as Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Singapore that started in May 2026. Meta says the private‑chat rollout is a response to user feedback for a more private AI experience and an effort to keep users within its ecosystem, reducing reliance on external tools like ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
Meta also noted that Threads now has about 500 million monthly active users as of June 2026, giving the AI a large audience from day one. Users can mute or hide Meta AI responses through the app’s settings, and the AI’s behavior remains governed by Meta’s community standards and privacy policies.
