Meta AI privacy concerns rise after identifying minors via data scraping

Meta AI has faced intense scrutiny following reports that its algorithm performed unauthorized data aggregation to identify minors. Kalie Robins, a content creator from Utah, discovered that after posting a video of her daughter on Instagram without any identifying details, Meta AI generated a prompt asking, “Who’s the child passenger?”.

Upon interacting with the prompt, the AI provided highly specific personal information, including the names and birth dates of Robins’s children, their school grade, and even details about their favorite books and local hiking trails. The AI appeared to have bypassed individual privacy settings by cross-referencing historical posts and public information from Robins’s extended social network, including relatives' accounts.

Meta acknowledged the incident, stating that the AI was designed to help users discover related topics but admitted that the specific prompts were “misexecuted” and should not have been presented. While Meta claims the issue has been fixed, critics and parents have raised concerns regarding whether the underlying algorithm has truly stopped the invasive cross-referencing of minors' data.
