Meta AI team restructuring sparks employee revolt

Meta has forced thousands of staff into a new Applied AI unit of about 6,500 engineers and product managers. Employees say they were compelled to switch roles without choice, tasked with creating coding challenges and test cases to train AI models. One worker described the work as “a labor camp,” and a live‑stream internal meeting was disrupted by an angry employee shouting expletives at AI leadership.

The restructuring coincides with broader layoffs affecting roughly 10% of Meta’s workforce (around 8,000 jobs) and a petition signed by more than 1,600 staff opposing a program that monitors mouse clicks and keystrokes for AI training. Senior executives have acknowledged the turmoil: Chief Product Officer Chris Cox called the environment “difficult” and “brutal,” while CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted mistakes in an internal memo and pledged greater stability.

The unrest highlights a growing challenge for tech firms rushing AI development: aligning aggressive internal reorganizations with employee morale and trust.
