Meta unveils lightweight VR Glasses and camera-free smart glasses
Meta has unveiled a new generation of wearable technology, headlined by the Meta VR Glasses set for a spring 2027 release. Designed to be significantly lighter than previous Quest models, the 100-gram device utilizes a split architecture. The glasses house the displays and sensors, while a separate, pocketable compute puck contains the battery, storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor.
The VR glasses feature 5K micro-OLED displays, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Interaction is primarily driven by AI, eye-tracking, and hand gestures rather than traditional controllers. The device is priced at $1,299.99 and is positioned as a personal cinema and spatial workstation.
In parallel, Meta is expanding its smart glasses lineup with the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses. These camera-free models focus on audio, calls, and AI interactions via the Muse agent. They weigh 43 grams, offer up to 12 hours of battery life, and start at $349. Meta is also introducing photorealistic AI-driven avatars, referred to as ‘Holograms’, which will be available for use on smart glasses and the upcoming VR hardware.
Development support for the new VR hardware has already been announced by Unity, allowing creators to build and test content ahead of the official launch. Additionally, Meta is partnering with Naver to integrate voice-guided walking navigation into its AI glasses by the end of the year.
