Meta collects three times more user data than Microsoft or Apple

A study by Surfshark has revealed that Meta collects significantly more user data on average than other major technology companies. After analyzing 171 apps from the Apple App Store, researchers found that Meta's apps collect an average of 25 different types of data out of a possible 35. This figure is more than triple the average collection rate of companies like Microsoft and Apple.

While Meta leads in the variety of data types collected, Google was identified as owning the highest number of data-hungry apps, accounting for 29 out of 40 in the study. Other findings showed that Amazon Alexa is the most data-intensive app outside of Meta's ecosystem, gathering 28 different data types.

In comparison, Apple and Microsoft were noted as the most conservative regarding data collection. Apple's utility apps averaged only six data types, while Google's utility apps averaged 17. The study examined various categories, including browsing history, precise location, and purchase history.
