Meta denies political bias in 2026 Brazilian election content distribution

Meta has submitted a formal response to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE), denying allegations of political bias in the distribution of content during the 2026 presidential campaign. The company’s filing comes in response to claims by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign that Instagram favored opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.

According to Meta, organic reach data shows that Lula’s campaign accounts reached 1.5 times more people than Flávio Bolsonaro’s accounts throughout the election period. The company noted that while Flávio Bolsonaro had higher reach per individual post due to less frequent posting, Lula achieved a higher total volume of users.

Meta also addressed concerns regarding Deputy Nikolas Ferreira, stating that his high view counts may have been inflated by users repeatedly watching the same short videos, rather than a broader reach. The company argued that differences in engagement reflect varying digital strategies, posting frequencies, and user interactions rather than algorithmic favoritism.

In a broader analysis, Meta reported that views for content critical of Lula were 1.13 times higher than views for content favorable to him, suggesting a near-equivalent distribution between government supporters and the opposition.
