Meta develops Luna smart glasses without cameras to address privacy concerns
Meta is reportedly developing a new line of smart glasses, internally codenamed ‘Luna’, that will lack a built-in camera. This strategic shift aims to address ongoing privacy concerns and public backlash regarding the potential for unauthorized recording, which has led to bans on camera-equipped wearables in various public venues like schools and theaters.
Expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Meta Connect conference on September 23-24, the Luna glasses will focus on audio-based interaction and artificial intelligence. The device is anticipated to feature six integrated microphones and speakers designed for voice commands and interaction with Meta AI and the Muse AI agent. The hardware may be available in two styles, Clubmaster and Burbank, and is expected to begin shipping in October.
By removing the camera, Meta hopes to create a more discreet device with a slimmer profile and improved battery life, potentially reducing the social friction and legal challenges associated with its current Ray-Ban Meta models.
