Meta disables camera on Ray‑Ban AI glasses if capture LED is altered

Meta has issued a mandatory software update for its Ray‑Ban AI glasses that automatically shuts off the camera when the white capture LED is covered, damaged, or otherwise tampered with. The company states that “covering or disabling this capture LED automatically disables the camera,” and notes that the LED has no off switch.

The move follows growing privacy concerns, reports of covert recordings, and a ban on the glasses in New York State courtrooms effective July 20, which aims to prevent surreptitious filming of legal proceedings. Users have expressed backlash, with some owners choosing to stop wearing the devices for fear of being perceived as “creeps” or of potential misuse.

Meta is also reportedly testing more advanced “super‑sensing” AI glasses that could continuously capture audio and visual data for contextual assistance, raising further questions about how the devices collect and process information beyond the visible LED indicator.
