Meta faces landmark trial over allegations of addictive social media design for minors FAST-MOVING

Meta Platforms is facing a landmark federal trial in Oakland, California, brought by a coalition of state attorneys general, including representatives from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey. The lawsuit alleges that Meta intentionally designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children and adolescents, contributing to a youth mental health crisis.

Plaintiffs claim the company utilized manipulative features such as infinite scrolling, frequent notifications, and algorithmic recommendations to maximize engagement and profit. The legal action also alleges violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) regarding the collection of data from users under 13 without parental consent.

If Meta is found liable, the company could face unprecedented financial penalties estimated at up to $1.4 trillion, a figure approaching its total market capitalization. Beyond monetary damages, the states are seeking structural changes to Meta's business model, including stricter age verification processes and modifications to algorithms and features like Instagram Stories to reduce compulsive use.
