Meta faces federal trial over allegations of designing addictive platforms for children
A landmark federal trial has commenced in Oakland, California, against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. A coalition of 29 US states, including California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, accuses the tech giant of deliberately designing addictive features to exploit young users and contributing to a youth mental health crisis.
During testimony, former Meta engineering director Arturo Béjar alleged that the company maintained a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ approach regarding users under the age of 13. Béjar claimed that Meta prioritized growth, engagement, and profit over child safety, noting that employee performance and compensation were heavily tied to user retention metrics. He further testified that CEO Mark Zuckerberg was closely involved in decision-making processes that prioritized these metrics.
The lawsuit also alleges that Meta violated federal privacy laws by collecting personal data from children under 13 without parental consent. The states are seeking significant financial penalties, with some claims reaching up to $1.4 trillion, and are requesting court-ordered changes to how Meta’s products are designed to protect minors.
Meta has rejected all allegations, maintaining that it has developed various safety tools for young users and complies with federal laws. The company argues that its algorithms are protected under the First Amendment and that it cannot be held liable for third-party content.
