Meta faces EU pressure to adopt US minor protection measures
Following a major settlement in the United States, approximately 50 Members of the European Parliament are urging the European Union to compel Meta to implement similar minor protection measures within Europe. In the US, Meta agreed to a 17 billion dollar settlement that includes limiting social media use to two hours per day for users under 18 and blocking access between midnight and 6:00 AM.
European lawmakers, led by Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, argue that European children deserve the same protections. They have called on Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to take decisive action, even suggesting the temporary suspension of Facebook and Instagram if necessary.
The European Commission has stated that Meta has not yet presented any satisfactory measures to resolve its own ongoing investigation. A preliminary probe concluded in July that the addictive design of Instagram and Facebook violates the Digital Services Act. If these findings are confirmed, Meta could face fines of up to 6% of its annual global turnover, potentially exceeding 11 billion euros.
