Poland challenges Meta over fraudulent deepfake advertisements

Polish authorities and business leaders are escalating their confrontation with Meta over the proliferation of fraudulent advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. These scams frequently utilize AI-generated deepfakes and the likenesses of celebrities and politicians to promote fake investment opportunities.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski expressed dissatisfaction with Meta's response to government inquiries, describing it as lacking a clear plan to eliminate these ads. Gawkowski emphasized that such fraudulent content should be removed within minutes rather than days. He also disclosed correspondence from Meta that the company had requested to keep confidential, asserting that citizens have a right to know the scale of these scams.

InPost CEO Rafał Brzoska, who has been a prominent critic of the platform's handling of these issues, argued that the problem extends beyond public figures to all citizens whose identities could be exploited. Brzoska advocated for stricter preventative measures, stating that fraudulent paid advertisements should be blocked from publication entirely rather than merely being removed after they have already circulated and monetized.
