Meta faces major US lawsuit over child safety and privacy

Meta is facing a major consumer protection lawsuit in the United States brought by the attorneys general of 29 states. The legal action accuses the company of systematically violating privacy and protection laws targeting children and adolescents.

The lawsuit alleges that Meta intentionally designed the architecture of Instagram and Facebook to maximize engagement and retention among young users. Proposed remedies sought by the plaintiffs include the elimination of ‘Stories’, the removal of public like counts and autoplay features, and a ban on aesthetic filters that alter facial features. Additionally, the states are seeking structural changes to recommendation algorithms and mandatory parental authorization for adolescent accounts.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has characterized the litigation as a ‘tobacco moment’ for Meta, drawing parallels to the legal battles faced by tobacco companies in the 1990s. Meta has officially contested the allegations, stating that the company disagrees with the claims and remains committed to the safety and well-being of young users.
