Meta faces scrutiny over moderation and fact-checking in Latin America

Meta is facing scrutiny over its content moderation and copyright enforcement policies in Latin America. In Argentina, the media outlet Canal C is preparing a legal injunction in Córdoba to contest the suspension of its Instagram account. Attorney Andrés Piazza argues that the platform's automated copyright claims often ignore the “right to quote” established for journalistic purposes under the Berne Convention and intellectual property laws.

Simultaneously, Meta is reportedly dismantling its professional disinformation-fighting infrastructure in the region. The company intends to replace paid professional journalists from networks like LatamChequea with anonymous users to handle fact-checking. Verifiers warn that this shift from professional methodology to unpaid user monitoring could increase the circulation of false content and AI-generated misinformation across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
