Meta faces scrutiny in Poland over fraudulent ads and scam profits
In Poland, business leader Rafał Brzoska and the '150%' initiative are calling for significant legal changes to hold social media platforms, specifically Meta, accountable for fraudulent advertisements. A report released by Brzoska alleges that Meta earns approximately 760 million PLN annually in Poland from scam ads, including those involving deepfakes, pornography, and fake investments. Brzoska argues that Meta possesses the technology to prevent these scams but fails to act because the practice is profitable. The initiative proposes that platforms should be financially liable for 150% of the revenue gained from fraudulent content and calls for mandatory advertiser verification similar to AML/KYC standards.
Simultaneously, the Polish Personal Data Protection Office (UODO) has appealed to the President to sign legislation implementing the Digital Services Act (DSA). This legislation aims to provide mechanisms for blocking illegal content and combating digital threats like deepfakes and cyberbullying.
In a related technological development, NASK-PIB has introduced DROZD, a new tool designed to detect and recognize deepfake content by analyzing visual, auditory, and textual signals to combat the rising tide of synthetic media manipulation.
