Meta Graph API and GraphQL technology overview
The Meta Graph API serves as the primary interface for applications to interact with Facebook data. It utilizes an HTTP-based structure consisting of nodes (single objects like users or photos), edges (collections of connected objects), and fields (specific data about an object). To ensure security and permission management, the API requires access tokens, which can be short-lived (one to two hours) or long-lived (approximately 60 days).
Complementing these data retrieval methods is GraphQL, a query language originally developed at Facebook. Unlike traditional REST-ish APIs, which often require multiple requests to different URLs to gather related data—leading to issues like network spamming or over-fetching unnecessary information—GraphQL allows clients to request specific JSON results from a server. This approach aims to solve common inefficiencies in data transfer by providing more precise control over the information returned.
