Meta hit with billions in fines as Norwegian unit reports third consecutive loss

Meta Platforms Inc. was ordered by a New Mexico judge to pay a fine of 5.4 billion Norwegian kroner for failing to warn the public about the dangers its platforms pose to children. The ruling follows an earlier $3.6 billion penalty imposed in March for exposing minors to sexual content and other risks. Meta announced it will place the money in a fund aimed at reducing future harm.

In Norway, Facebook Norway AS recorded revenue of 202 million kroner for 2025 but posted an annual loss of 37 million kroner, marking the third year in a row the subsidiary has operated at a deficit. Operating cash fell sharply to 5 million kroner after the company entered Meta’s internal cash‑pooling system. The Norwegian unit’s performance contrasts with Meta’s global earnings of $60.8 billion in the second quarter, which beat revenue expectations but fell short on earnings per share.
