Meta India executives summoned over alleged child exploitation advertisements
Meta India executives have been summoned by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to appear on September 9. The summons follows an inquiry into allegations that paid advertisements on Meta-owned platforms, including Instagram, promoted child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSEAM).
The investigation was prompted by a BBC Eye report alleging that advertisements used specific terms to redirect users to Telegram channels where such material was reportedly available for sale. The report also raised concerns regarding Meta’s recommendation algorithms and its ability to moderate harmful content.
In a parallel development, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Delhi Police to conduct a comprehensive probe. This investigation aims to determine if Meta and other entities complied with mandatory reporting obligations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) previously directed Instagram to disable content and advertisements facilitating access to CSEAM.
