Meta invests $13 bn in AI data center in Alberta, Canada

Meta announced a $13 billion investment to build its first AI‑optimized data center in Alberta, Canada. The 1‑gigawatt facility will be located north of Edmonton and is designed to run on 100 % clean, renewable electricity with a water‑efficient closed‑loop cooling system that eliminates operational water use. The project is expected to employ more than 3,000 construction workers at peak and create over 300 permanent operational jobs, while Meta will also allocate about C$60 million for local infrastructure improvements and community grants.

The announcement follows a broader trend of major U.S. tech firms expanding in the province, with companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft already establishing data‑center operations in Alberta. The region’s abundant energy, available land and cold climate make it attractive for high‑performance computing and artificial‑intelligence workloads.
