Meta Smart Glasses Face Privacy Backlash and Platform Crackdown

Meta has released AI‑powered smart glasses developed with Ray‑Ban and Oakley, featuring built‑in cameras, microphones, speakers and a voice assistant. The launch was promoted with celebrity Kylie Jenner, who helped design a frame and provided her voice for the AI assistant.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns because the glasses can record silently; the LED recording indicator can be disabled, and users have reported modifications that hide the light. Reports of “pervert glasses” and hidden‑camera videos have led Meta to block Instagram accounts that post such content, citing harassment and non‑consensual recordings. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said large prank‑style and pick‑up‑artist videos have been removed and the offending accounts deactivated.

In response to user backlash over a newly introduced usage‑limit policy for AI features, Meta paused the enforcement of the restriction while it reviews feedback. Regulators in the UK have opened an investigation after reports that content‑review contractors accessed intimate footage captured by the glasses. Meta also announced a software update that detects when the LED indicator is covered and disables the camera in that case.

The controversy has sparked broader debate about facial‑recognition capabilities, data collection and the broader impact of wearable AI on privacy worldwide.
