Meta pulls Instagram AI image tool over privacy concerns

Meta introduced Muse Image, an AI image generator that let users create pictures by @‑mentioning public Instagram accounts. The feature was automatically enabled for all public profiles, allowing anyone to remix a person’s photos without notification or consent. Critics, including the SAG‑AFTRA union, talent agency CAA, and privacy groups, warned that the tool could be used to produce deep‑fake images and violate likeness rights.

After several days of backlash and legal scrutiny, Meta announced that the feature was being removed, saying it “missed the mark.” The company directed users to disable the option in Instagram’s Settings under “Sharing and Reuse.” Private accounts were already excluded, but images already generated remain online. The episode highlights ongoing debates about AI‑driven content creation, user consent, and platform responsibility.

Meta continues to roll out other AI tools across its services, but the Muse Image controversy underscores the need for clearer consent mechanisms and robust detection of AI‑generated media.
