Meta cuts 8,000 jobs, moves 7,000 staff into new AI divisions

Meta announced a restructuring that will terminate about 8,000 employees—roughly 10% of its workforce—while transferring roughly 7,000 workers into four newly created AI groups: Applied AI Engineering, Agent Transformation Accelerator, Central Analytics and Enterprise Solutions.

The plan also cancels around 6,000 open positions and eliminates many pure‑manager roles, requiring remaining managers to contribute code. Leaders will supervise about 50 engineers each. The shift is part of an investment of $115‑$135 billion in AI infrastructure through 2026, nearly double the previous year’s spend, aimed at data‑center expansion, AI chips and large‑language‑model training.

Despite the layoffs, Meta reported record financial performance, posting more than $56 billion in revenue and $27 billion net income in the first quarter and revenue of $201 billion for 2025. Internal monitoring tools are being used to track employee activity for AI training. The move mirrors similar AI‑driven restructuring at Microsoft, Google and Amazon.
